Threat Scanner

The core of our Internet Security software is the StopSign Threat Scanner. The StopSign Threat Scanner finds and cleans viruses, spyware, trojans, adware, malicious code, keyloggers, worms, browser hijackers and other Internet security threats.

Threat Scanner Settings

  • Restore Defaults: Will return your software to the initial default settings.

  • Help: Shows the StopSign help files.

  • OK: Will apply any changes or additions you have made and close the window.

  • Cancel: Will cancel any changes.

  • Apply: Applies any changes.

  • Scanning - Choose Files To Scan

    Shows the current settings and allows you to make changes.

    • Executable files only: Scans only the files most likely to be infected. Only recommended for advanced users.

    • Scan inside archives: Scans zip files, cab files, etc.

    • Scan inside email database: Scans your email storage databases.

    • Only scan files modified within X days: The last "X" number of days. Only scans files whose modified date is within the selected range.

    • Do not scan files larger than X MB: The default is 50MB which optimizes the time spent performing a scan.

  • Scanning - Scan Frequency
    • AutoScan: Automatic scanning instead of manual.

    • Max protection mode: The software will scan your computer whenever you are not using it, up to three (3) times per day.

    • Scan at scheduled time: Allows you to decide when the scan will run.

    • Edit schedule: Allows you to make changes to the scan schedule.

  • Scanning - Detection

    Allows you to determine what types of threats you want the software to detect.

    • All threat types: Detects all types of infections. Preferred mode.

    • Spyware and Adware only.

    • Viruses only.

  • General - Select an action for the following

    This window allows you to make changes to how virus threats are handled depending on where they are found, what action to take with other types of threats, how fast to run the scanner, and how you want to see scan results.

    • Virus threats found in:

      • Recycle bin: Data in this area is expected to be deleted within a short time frame under normal circumstances. Delete will automatically delete them. Prompt will ask you what you want to do.

      • Temp directory: Data in this area is expected to be deleted within a short time frame under normal circumstances. Delete will automatically delete them. Prompt will ask you what you want to do. Quarantine will make them inaccessible, but gives you the ability to restore them if needed in the future.

      • Other locations: Specify the action to take on all other viruses found on your computer. Delete will automatically delete them. Prompt will ask you what you want to do. Quarantine will make them inaccessible, but gives you the ability to restore them if needed in the future.

    • Other threat types:

      • Suspicious files: Delete will automatically delete them. Prompt will ask you what you want to do. Quarantine will make them inaccessible, but gives you the ability to restore them if needed in the future.

      • Spyware cookies: Delete will automatically delete them. Prompt will ask you what you want to do. Ignore will allow all of them.

      • Spyware/Adware: Delete will automatically delete them. Prompt will ask you what you want to do. Ignore will allow all of them.

      • Joke programs: These are programs that have been downloaded to your computer to make it behave in unusual, but expected non-malicious ways. Examples are unusual/unique icons; certain letters turned backwards, animals or other objects randomly appearing on your screen. Delete will automatically delete them. Prompt will ask you what you want to do. Quarantine will make them inaccessible, but gives you the ability to restore them if needed in the future. Ignore will allow all of them.

  • General - Scan Speed (CPU usage)

    Allows you to determine how fast you want to scan.

  • General - Scan results

    Allows you to determine how often or if you want to view the scan results.

    • Always show scan results: A scan result summary will be shown at the completion of all scans.

    • Only show a weekly scan results summary unless an infection is found: A scan result summary will be shown once per week.

    • Show scan results only if an uncured infection is found: A scan result summary will be shown only if uncleaned infections remain on your computer after a scan.

    • Never show scan results: A scan result summary will not be shown after a scan.

    • Archive scan results: Allows you to keep a log of your scan results.

    • Maximum scan results in archive: Allows you to determine the total number of scan results you want to save in the archive.

  • Custom Cure™

    New or emerging viruses may attack your computer. If you have an infection that is not automatically cured by the software, a Custom Cure can be created to clean your computer. There are three (3) options available to configure Custom Cure requests:

    • No, I do not want help cleaning my computer. The software will never request a Custom Cure. Infections that cannot be cured automatically will remain on your computer.

    • Yes, but prompt me before requesting help and sending scan results. The software will prompt you before requesting a Custom Cure. You must provide an OK to start the cleaning process.

    • Yes, automatically request help and send scan results. No interaction required, a Custom Cure is requested automatically.
